Interesting and exciting things are happening as Girl Talk Theatre continues to grow!
September 2008TWO CHANCES TO SEE GIRL TALK THIS FALL!!
September 27th - Back To LIfe
AND
October 4th - Acting Our Lives
Hello to all of the faithful supporters of Girl Talk Theatre! I trust everyone has had a relaxing a sun-filled summer! Here at Girl Talk Theatre we have been working hard preparing for two performances this Fall (of course we did manage to have some fun too!! more on that later!!).
BACK TO LIFE
I'm sure most of you have already received the flyer for the performance at the beautiful new CENTRAL SQUARE THEATRE SEPTEMBER 27th AT 1:30. This performance is created and performed by the Girl Talk Theatre alumni class, ladies who have already performed with Girl Talk are ready to do it again! My favourite part of the performance so far is a musical spoof of the reality of the Section 8 process - I think you'll have as much fun seeing it as we did creating it!! We are having a great time collaborating on this project with the Nora Theatre Company - and also getting to enjoy their beautiful new theatre!
ACTING OUR LIVES
Before being invited to the alumni class, all of our students get to enjoy having a performance on site, within their own community. I have had the privilege this summer of teaching at Women's Lunch Place. Their class performance will be at WOMEN'S LUNCH PLACE on OCTOBER 4th AT 2:00 (I'll be sending out a flyer soon!) These women have fascinating stories to tell and do a beautiful job of telling them too. We also like to have fun - the actresses have decided to pay tribute to the staff of WLP by writing an original rap song!! It's a lot of fun to rehearse, but they are ready for an audience! I hope you will be able to attend one or both of these performances. As always, tickets are free but reservations are recommended - donations can be given at the door, but are not required!! Just come and enjoy the wonderful work of these dynamic women! For reservations call 857-294-9750 or e-mail stephanie@girltalktheatre.org
SHAKESPEARE GETS SOME NEW GIRLFRIENDS
Girl Talk Field Trips
This summer the "Girlfriends" , Board Members and several friends of Girl Talk topped off the summer with an evening at Shakespeare on the Common. We prepared by reading a synopsis and viewing the movie. After all that we were ready for a nice dinner under the stars and an evening of Shakespeare's As You LIke It. Even a short rain shower didn't dampen the fun. After all that Shakespeare the Girlfriends agree "We Luv Will"
WHAT'S NEXT??
After we rest up from our two performances, we are going to have a coffee house and improv night. The best kept secret of Girl Talk is that he "Girlfriends" of Girl Talk are getting quite good at improv! This holiday season we plan to let the secret out and let all of you join the fun. Stay tuned for date and time.
That's it for our first real, official, newsletter! See you all on the 27th and/or the 4th!!!

January 2008I know you've been waiting to hear what our "featured items needed"
this month!! This month our greatest need is storage space! We have
new lighting equipment and we need a home for it! If you have
storage, please let us know on our give/help page! Thanks!
A few weeks ago in class, I asked the women to remember when they were a child what they wanted to be when they grew up. They then wrote on a card their dream career. They took turns acting out this career, without their classmates knowing what it was. Their classmates observed and then called out the qualities they saw expressed as each woman acted out her childhood “dream life”. These qualities were then listed on the card. I then told the actress that these are the qualities that attracted them to this job, and that they still possess these qualities, they are very much alive in them even now. The evidence of that is written on the card they took home with them that day.
Another day I had a women do an exercise called “imaginary monologue” . In this exercise I offer the actress a chance to go back to a moment and rewrite history – say what they should have said at the time. This actress remembered a day when she first found herself homeless and someone came up to her and said, “Why aren’t you looking for a job? What’s wrong with you?” She was silent at the time but in class, she was able to have her say. The result was stunning for the observers and empowering and freeing for her.
One of my students felt inspired by her work in class to write a monologue for herself – a eulogy to the Judy of the past who was a user. We have worked together on this monologue and she is going to perform it at our January 20th performance. Her goal in writing and performing this piece is to give hope to people who are currently losing themselves to their addiction and to give encouragement to those that support people who are struggling with addiction. I have posted this monologue below – I think you will enjoy reading it – but more than that, you need to come to Rosie’s Place on January 20th at 2:00 and see all of the actresses of Girl Talk perform the worked they have created together!!
I could fill many pages with examples like the ones I talk about here. The main thing I can say about the classes of Girl Talk Theatre is that the women involved are unique, strong, sassy, feisty, lovely, elegant, and they surprise me and teach me things everyday.
Thanks for reading Girl Chat! And..don’t forget to scroll down to read Eulogy for Active Judy
